Checking a Maltese company's VAT registration
A Maltese company gets a VAT number by registering under the Value Added Tax Act (Cap. 406) with the Commissioner for Tax and Customs. On registration it is assigned a VAT number (VAT number) in the form EE followed by eight digits. It is issued separately from the number the Registrar assigned, and neither can be derived from the other.
The check runs against VIES (the VAT Information Exchange System) operated by the European Commission. It returns the current registration status across the whole EU, so a foreign supplier is verified exactly the same way.
What you can enter
- Company ID — a letter prefix and digits, such as C 12345. We find the company in the register and check its VAT number.
- VAT number (VAT number) — for example MT12345678. Checked directly in VIES.
- Company name — we return the matches and you pick the right company.
Frequently asked questions
- How do I check whether a company is registered for VAT?
- Enter the company's company ID, VAT number or name in the search above. If the company has a VAT number, we verify it directly against the European Commission's VIES system and show the current result.
- Is there a public list of VAT payers in Malta?
- Not one this site publishes, and not one it will claim exists without having read it. What can be checked, for any company in Malta or anywhere else in the EU, is a single number: the European Commission's VIES system answers whether a given VAT number is valid right now. That is what the search above does.
- What is the difference between a company ID and a VAT number?
- The registration number is what the Registrar assigns when an entity goes on the register — a letter prefix and digits, such as C 12345. A VAT number is issued by a different authority, only to those who register for VAT, and is written MT plus eight digits. Every registered entity has a registration number; not every one has a VAT number.
- Why does a partner's VAT number matter?
- If a supplier puts an invalid VAT number on an invoice, it can cause problems when deducting input VAT. Checking it in VIES is a routine part of vetting a new business partner.
